The campaign allows players to take on the role of a particular faction and create a civilisation, economically and militarily, to defeat other factions. The game is played by controlling a faction’s economic, military and social system on large maps. The player can move armies, agents, and fleets on the map during their turn. What the goal is depends on what type of campaign you are playing. In the short campaign, players must control 15 settlements and defeat at least two enemies factions. In the long campaign, players must control 45 or more territories, and at least two important cities that are specific to a faction, like Jerusalem, Granada or Rome.
All nations conquered during the Grand Campaign become playable, except for the Papal States (only found in New World or the Late Period), Aztecs and Rebels. All factions are playable after completing the Grand Campaign, regardless of difficulty.
